James Earl Ray (b. Alton, IL in 1928) was an American assassin of the black civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. He had committed several small-time crimes and served time in jail before shooting King on April 23, 1967. Ray was sentenced to 99 years, but escaped the Brushy Mountain Tennessee Prison in 1977 for 54 hours before being captured in a massive manhunt. He died in prison in 1998.
