J. Robin Warren was born on June 11, 1937, in Adelaide, Australia. After receiving bachelor's degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Adelaide, he went into pathology. With Barry J. Marshall, Warren determined that the bacteria Helicobacter pylori are the cause of ulcers (formerly thought to be caused by excess gastric acid). For their work, the pair won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005.
