Viewers of all races tuned in to see what was happening with the Jeffersons. Sanford was nominated seven times for her portrayal of the quick-witted Louise, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series once in 1981.
Later Career
Even after the show ended its run in 1985, The Jeffersons remained popular in syndication. Isabel Sanford remained active during the next three decades, taking on a variety of projects. She guest starred on such television shows as Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Dream On, Living Single, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Roseanne. In the later part of her career, she reteamed with Sherman Hemsley for a series of commercials. She even lent her voice to an episode of the animated series The Simpsons.Isabel Sanford died on July 9, 2004, in Los Angeles, California. Earlier that year, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a sign of her lasting importance in the field of acting. Sanford had three children from her first marriage to William Richmond.
