Born in Pittstown, New York, on October 27, 1811, Isaac Merrit Singer was a famed inventor and entrepreneur. He was not the first to manufacture a sewing machine, but his Singer Sewing Machine Company found success in being the first company to make sewing machines practical and easy to use at home. Additionally, Singer pioneered the use of installment payment plans for his many customers. He died on July 23, 1875, in Torquay, Devon, England.
