Born on November 9, 1929, in Budapest, Hungary, Imre Kertész was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp and then to Buchenwald, where he was freed. He went on to work as a journalist and a translator. His semi-autobiographical novel about a young man surviving the Holocaust, Fateless, was published in 1975. Two other works followed, forming a trilogy. He won the literature Nobel Prize in 2002.
