Ian Ziering appeared in his first national TV commercial when he was 12 years old, soon after making appearances on soap operas. In 1990, Ziering landed the role that would change his life: that of Steve Sanders on the teen drama Beverly Hills 90210. The show brought instant fame to the cast, and Ziering was suddenly a heartthrob. In 1997, Ziering married Playboy Playmate Nikki Schieler, but the pair divorced five years later. Once 90210 came to an end in 2000,
Ziering made appearances on other shows and did voice-over work for animated series. In 2008, Ziering signed on to the fourth season of TV’s Dancing with the Stars, eventually making it to the semifinal round.
Ian Ziering was born on March 20, 1964, and raised in West Orange, New Jersey, a suburb of New York City. By the mid-1970s, Ziering was landing spots in commercials and stage plays, most notably in the dramatic play I Remember Mama and in a national touring production of Peter Pan. The first film in which Ziering appeared was 1981’s Endless Love (he played Brooke Shields's little brother), which also marked the big-screen debuts of Tom Cruise and James Spader.
The late 1980s found Ziering on the daytime soap opera Guiding Light, but his star would rise in 1990, when he landed the role of Steve Sanders on the teen drama Beverly Hills 90210. Ziering was 26 years old when the show began, but he played teenage Sanders for 10 years, along the way gaining heightened fame and attaining the status of heartthrob. At the height of 90210’s success, Ziering met Nikki Schieler, who was an extra on the show. The couple married in 1997, the same year that Schieler was named Playboy magazine’s "Playmate of the Month" (September 1997). The couple divorced in 2002.
While riding the wave of 90210, Ziering also kept busy on the side, appearing in the Russell Crowe movie No Way Back and doing voiceover work on such TV shows as Biker Mice from Mars, Mighty Ducks and Batman Beyond. Beverly Hills 90210 and Ziering’s Steve Sanders kept on chugging until 2000, when the plug was finally pulled on the show.
Post-90210, Ziering began popping up in bit parts on random TV shows, including Son of the Beach, JAG, What I Like About You and Inside Schwartz. He also continued on with his voiceover work, lending his talents to Spider-Man (Harry Osborne). In 2005, in a real change of pace, Ziering appeared in the Tony Scott thriller Domino, playing a version of himself. The year 2007 also marked a real departure for the actor: He returned to prime-time TV as a contestant on ABC's hit dance-competition show, Dancing with the Stars. He was paired with Cheryl Burke, and the duo remained on the show for several weeks, eventually making it as far as the semifinals.
In May 2010, Ziering married Erin Ludwig, a nurse. A year later, the couple welcomed a baby girl named Mia Loren Ziering.
