Horace Pippin was born on February 22, 1888, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Injured during WWI, Pippin taught himself to paint in order to regain the use of his right arm. An African American, his canvases illustrate the injustices of slavery and the horrors of war. His first major work, End of the War: Starting Home, was followed by Holy Mountain. Pippin was featured in an exhibition at New York City's Museum of Modern Art in 1938. He died in 1946.
