Horace Greeley (b. 1811) was an American newspaper editor, well known for his strong opposition to slavery. His New York Tribune was America's most influential newspaper for over 30 years. He founded the Liberal Republican Party, and ran as its first candidate in 1872 against Ulysses S. Grant. He died prior to the counting of electoral votes, and lost in a landslide.
