Herbert Marcuse was a German-born American political philosopher whose Marxists/Freudian theories of Western society influenced liberal student groups in the 1960s, particularly after student uprisings in Paris, West Berlin and at Columbia University in 1968. Marcuse was a prominent figure in the Frankfurt-based Institute for Social Research - what later became known as the Frankfurt School.
