Henry Ward Beecher was born June 24, 1813, in Litchfield, Connecticut. In 1836 he was ordained by the Presbyterian Church. In 1839 he took a position at the Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, where he developed his unique preaching style. In 1870 he was made editor of The Christian Union. That year he also became involved in an adultery scandal. He died March 8, 1887, in Brooklyn, New York.
