Henri Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. His work is especially noted for its color, a characteristic that became more pronounced when he moved to the French Riviera. In the early 1900s, he was associated with a group known as "Fauves." Pablo Picasso was a friend and artistic rival. Matisse's The Dance paintings are internationally recognized.
