Helen Thomas was born on August 4, 1920, in Winchester, Kentucky. She became the first female member of the White House press corps during the John F. Kennedy administration. Also, she was the United Press International’s first female White House bureau chief. After working for the UPI for nearly six decades, Thomas retired in 2000. Afterwards, she became a syndicated columnist for Hearst.
