The young couple split for a few months in 2007 during a rocky patch. "I at the time wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person," Kate said later. "You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realized...I really valued that time...although I didn't think it at the time." Despite the split, Kate (far right) sat a few rows behind her former beau at the Concert for Diana in July 2007, organized by William and his brother Prince Harry for the 10th anniversary of their mother's death.

Prince William proposed to Middleton on a vacation to Kenya in October 2010. He gave her his mother's engagement ring; a diamond-and-sapphire sparkler that cost £28,000 in 1981. "I was carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that, and I literally would not let it go," said the Prince.
