In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband John Bobbit's penis. She claimed he beat and raped her repeatedly, and she was acquitted by reason of temporary insanity.

When her lover Julius Ceaser was killed, Egyptian queen Cleopatra began an affair with Roman general Marc Antony. When the Roman emperor turned against Antony, Cleopatra was forced to flee Egypt. She spread rumors of her own suicide—only to have Antony kill himself as a result. When Cleopatra found out, legends say she took her own life by inducing a poisonous snake to bite her.

Cheryl Crane was the only child of Hollywood legend Lana Turner, who brought several lovers, some abusive, into the family home. When one of Turner's boyfriends, Johnny Stompanato, turned violent, 14-year-old Cheryl stabbed and killed him. A judge ruled it a justifiable homicide.

Singer and actress Claudine Longet was accused of killing her lover, the notorious bachelor and Olympic skier Vladimir "Spider" Sabich. Longet was acquitted of manslaughter and convicted of criminal negligence, and has since stayed out of the public eye.

The Church of England was formed, and Anne gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I. When no male child was produced, Anne was committed to the Tower of London and beheaded.

The son of an oil executive, John Hinckley, Jr. became obsessed with Jodie Foster after seeing her in Taxi Driver. He stalked her, then shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981 to get her attention. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and has been in a psychiatric institution ever since.

On May 28, 1998, Saturday Night Live funnyman Phil Hartman was shot to death while he was sleeping by his wife, Brynn Omdahl. Omdahl had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years, and shot herself shortly after. The couple left behind a son and daughter.

Sylvia Plath was a young, talented writer who struggled with depression and a stormy relationship with her husband, writer Ted Hughes. Her famous novel The Bell Jar is about a young woman's mental breakdown. When Hughes left her for another woman, she committed suicide on February 11, 1963.

Sex Pistols punk rocker Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen shared a strong bond, and a terrible addiction. On October 12, 1979, Spungen was found stabbed to death. Vicious lay in the hallway in a drug-induced fog. He died of a heroin overdose months later, before a trial could take place.
