Famous Supreme Court Justices
The Supreme Court has presided over landmark cases that have changed the history of the United States. At times, the judges themselves have been the history makers, as in the case of Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Justice; Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court; and Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Here’s a look at the famous judges who have served on the United States' highest court.
Sandra Day O'Connor
Supreme Court Justice / 1930 -
Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. A Republican, she was considered a moderate conservative and served for 24 years.
William Howard Taft
Academic, Supreme Court Justice, U.S. President / 1857 - 1930
William Howard Taft, the 27th president of the United States, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the only person to have served as both a U.S. chief justice and president.
Civil Rights Activist, Lawyer, Judge, Supreme Court Justice / 1908 - 1993
Thurgood Marshall was instrumental in ending legal segregation and became the first African-American justice of the Supreme Court.
Lawyer, Supreme Court Justice / 1948 -
Clarence Thomas is the second African-American justice to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. He was appointed in 1991 and leans conservative.
