    Women haven't always had an easy time achieving greatness but, even in the face of daunting odds, they still manage to rise to the top. Women have led countries and commanded armies and, as women took their place in society in the 20th century, they broke ground in every field. Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court bench, and Sally Ride was the first woman in outer space. Dorothy Dandridge shined as the first African-American woman nominated for an Academy Award. These women, and many others, paved the way for the women of their day, and of the future.

    London Cultural Icons

    Throughout history, the British have made their mark on pop culture from art and fashion to music and film. The 60's "Swinging London" saw the emergence of supermodels such as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, and was dominated by "British Invasion" rock groups like The Beatles and Cream. The 70's brought attention to glam rockers like David Bowie and punk pioneers like the Sex Pistols, while the 80's were marked by the political influences of powerful women - Princess Diana and the "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher.     Female Music Icons of the 1990s and New Millennium

    The 1990s was the era of the riot grrrl, the rapper and Lilith Fair, which served to reshape traditional ideas of feminism. Artists such as Bikini Kill, Meg White, Queen Latifah and Lady Gaga were able to explore the formerly male-dominated areas of the music industry and become some of the leading voices of the industry. Whether in high-heels, stilettos, or army boots, these ladies stood toe-to-toe with any male artist of the day.
