Greta Garbo was born September 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden. Garbo's father died when she was 14, leaving the family in poverty and forcing her to leave school and take a job at a department store. It was at the store Garbo started her career as a model and later as an actress in Swedish films. Her first appearance in an American film was a silent picture called Torrent in 1926.
