Synopsis

Born on May 9, 1986, actress Grace Gummer was raised in both California and Connecticut. Gummer and her older sister, Mamie, followed their acclaimed mother, Meryl Streep, into the acting business. Gummer appeared in her first major play in 2008, quickly adding additional roles in films, television shows and Broadway productions to her resume.

Early Life

Grace Jane Gummer was born on May 9, 1986. The third of four children born to actress Meryl Streep and sculptor Don Gummer, Grace Gummer grew up in both Los Angeles, California, and Salisbury, Connecticut. She has two older siblings—sister Mamie and brother Henry—and a younger sister, Louisa.

Gummer appeared in her first credited film role in 1993, playing a younger version of her mother's character, Clara del Valle Trueba, in The House of the Spirits. As a high school student, Gummer pursued athletics over theater, playing lacrosse and serving as captain of the swim team. She attended Vassar College, where she studied art history and Italian and dabbled in acting.

Acting Career

Gummer embarked on her acting career after a post-graduation stint in Rome, Italy. She made her stage debut in 2008 in Kristjan Thor's The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents, a play for which she was originally asked to design sets. Two years later, she starred on the Nickelodeon television show Gigantic and appeared in the crime-drama feature film Meskada.

By the time Gummer's career had begun taking shape, her older sister, Mamie, was already working regularly as an actress. Both sisters bear a striking resemblance to their famous mother that invites comparison. Gummer has stated that her parents, while supportive of her decision to pursue acting, did not push her into the field, and would have supported her in any profession she chose.

Film roles continued for Gummer following Meskada. After appearing in the short film Bashert (2010), she earned a small role in the Tom Hanks romantic comedy Larry Crowne (2011) and a part in the indie film Frances Ha (2012). She also continued to work as a stage actress. In 2011, Gummer played Chloe Coverly in the New York revival of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. She then joined the cast of The Columnist in 2012, co-starring with John Lithgow.

Gummer has also continued to work as a TV actress. In 2012, she appeared on the NBC show Smash, playing Anjelica Huston's daughter. That same year, HBO announced that Gummer had signed on for a recurring role in the second season of Aaron Sorkin's drama The Newsroom.
