Glenn Ford was born in Quebec City, Canada, in, 1916. He rose to fame after serving in World War II, with roles alongside actresses Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth. Ford's career began in 1939 and continued well into the 1990s, including the 1957 film 3:10 to Yuma and a small role in the original Superman film. In addition to acting in more than 100 films,

Ford continued his military career in the US Naval Reserve. He died on Augusy 30, 2006, in Beverly Hills.

Early Life

Actor Glenn Ford was born in Quebec, Canada, on May 1, 1916. Raised in Portneuf, Quebec, at age 7 he moved with his family to Santa Monica, California. After high school, he began working with small theatre groups and won his first film part in Heaven With a Barbed Wire Fence in 1939.

Acting Career

After military service in World War II he returned to acting, and went on to establish his reputation as an actor capable of playing lead roles across various genres, including westerns, dramas and romantic films. His many films included Gilda (1946), with Rita Hayworth, The Big Heat (1953), Blackboard Jungle (1955), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956), The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963) and Heaven with a Gun (1969). From the 1970s he appeared mainly in supporting roles in television series, such as Cade's County (1971-'72).

Personal Life

Married four times, his first marriage (1943-'59) was to tap dancer Eleanor Powell (1912-'82); their son Peter Ford (1945) became an actor as well. Ford died on August 30, 2006, in Beverley Hills, California.
