Giancomo, Marquis of Vascello Medici fought with Garibaldi's volunteers in the 1st Italian Independence War and was one of the leaders of the defense of Rome, holding off the French attack on the Vascello villa for 26 days. He also took part in the Second Independence War and led a contingent of volunteers in support of Garibaldi's Thousand. He was later a deputy and then a senator of the Italian parliament.
