George Rochberg was born on July 5, 1918, in Paterson, Jersey. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1960 to 1983. He was known as a 12-tone avant-gardist, but later mixed in traditional material, earning the label “neo-Romantic.” He died in 2005.
