Basketball player George Mikan was born in Joliet, Illinois, on June 18, 1924. He won five National Basketball Association (NBA) championships while playing for Minneapolis. He was 6 ft 10 in tall, setting a new height standard for basketball players. He retired in 1969 and became a practicing lawyer. He died in 2005.

He led the NBA in points-scoring three times. At 6 ft 10 in tall, he set the stage for the big men who now dominate the sport, and helped launch basketball into a new era. He resigned in 1969, continuing as a successful lawyer.
