George Crumb was born on October 24, 1929, in Charleston, West Virginia. He studied music at the University of Michigan and began teaching at the University of Pennsylvania in 1965. His style is noted for its haunting timbres and exploration of avant-garde sound. His most famous works are Echoes of Time and the River and Ancient Voices of Children.
