Geoffrey Chaucer was born around 1342, likely in London, England. Very little is known about his childhood, but his later years are well documented. He served in Edward III’s army by 1359 and he was married by 1366. His first important poem was the Book of the Duchess. Chaucer remained in service of the king, but wrote regularly. His best-known work is the unfinished book The Canterbury Tales.
