Günter Blobel was born on May 21, 1936, in Waltersdorf, Germany (now Niegosawice, Poland). He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Ph.D. in oncology and joined Rockefeller University’s protein laboratory. He became a professor in 1976 and obtained U.S. citizenship in the '80s. He received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1999 for his discoveries about proteins and their placement in cells.
