Francisco Franco Bahamonde was born on December 4, 1892, in El Ferrol, Spain. He became a brigadier general for the Spanish army in 1926 and in 1935 became chief of the Spanish army’s general staff. Disgruntled with the political system, Franco aired a manifesto in 1936 declaring a military rebellion. In 1939, he won and established his dictatorship over Spain, which he held until his death in 1975.
