Francisco de Zurbarán was born in Fuente de Cantos, Spain on November 7, 1598. He apprenticed with a painter in 1916 in Seville. He lived there until he moved to Madrid in 1659. Most of his life was spent as painting religious images. His work combined naturalism with religious sensibility. He had commissions in monasteries and churches in southern Spain. He died on August 17, 1664 in Madrid.
