Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was born on April 2, 1834 in Colmar, France. He studied sculptor and painting in Paris. In 1870, he designed the Statue of Liberty to mark the Franco-American alliance of 1778. He raised money in both France and the U.S. for the New York landmark. He also created the Lion of Belfort, which is carved out of red sandstone in France.
