Profile

Born in Watkins, Minnesota, on March 29, 1916, Eugene Joseph McCarthy studied at St. John's University and Minnesota University before returning to St. John's for a teaching position (1940-43). He went on to work in military intelligence during World War II, and then, in 1948, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Eugene J. McCarthy became nationally known when he challenged President Lyndon B. Johnson in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968—a decision that ultimately led to Johnson's withdrawal. McCarthy was eventually defeated by Robert F. Kennedy. In 1971, he turned to writing, producing works of non-fiction, poetry and children's stories. He died on December 10, 2005, in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
