Estée Lauder was born Josephine Esther Mentzer on July 1, 1908 (though there is some speculation that she was actually born two years earlier, in 1906), in Queens, New York. In 1946, Lauder started a beauty company with a skin cream developed by her chemist uncle. Seven years later, her Youth-Dew beauty oil launched Estée Lauder, Inc., which became a billion-dollar-a-year business.
Lauder was as innovative with her marketing strategies as her cosmetic products, selling and merchandising through top department stores and offering free product samples, eventually making her the richest self-made woman in the world.
Lauder died in New York City on April 24, 2004.
Personal Life
Lauder was married twice (1930-39, 1942-83) to Joseph Lauder, her business partner.
