Elmore Leonard, “The Dickens of Detroit,” made a name for himself as an author by writing pulp novels and advertising copy in the 1950s, but he's gone on to write such novels as “Rum Punch,” “3:10 to Yuma, “and “Get Shorty” It was the success of the movie adaptation of his novel “Hombre” that allowed him to finally give up his day job and dedicate himself to the world of hustlers, con men, pimps, and thieves that have enlivened his best works.
