Born Elizabeth Taylor in Natchez, Mississippi, circa 1817, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield began life as a slave, but was freed by her mistress as a young woman. After receiving her freedom, Greenfield chose to stay with her mistress and study singing, and took the family's name, Greenfield, as her own. In 1851, she performed in major northern cities, raising enough money to tour London, England. She sang for Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace in 1854. Greenfield then settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a voice teacher, giving occasional concerts. She died in Philadelphia on March 31, 1876.
