Profile

Born in 1755, Elizabeth Vigée-Lebrun was the daughter of an artist who married an art dealer. Her own portraits were popular with Parisian society, especially Queen Marie-Antoinette, who inspired Vigée-Lebrun to paint over 20 portraits. She fled Paris during the revolution, painting her way through Europe (including a portrait of Lord Byron). She published her memoirs before she died in 1842.
