Novelist and playwright Edna Ferber began her writing career as a reporter in her native Michigan. She soon started to write fiction, and in 1924, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel So Big. Ferber was very popular––her book Show Boat (1926) became a musical, and Giant (1952) was made into a movie (James Dean's final film).
