Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919, in Auckland, New Zealand and took up mountain climbing, becoming the first, along with Tibetan climber Tenzing Noray, to reach the top of Mt. Everest in 1953. Hillary later participated in expeditions to the South Pole and was among the first to reach the top of Mt. Herschel. He also cultivated resources for the people of Nepal. He died on January 11, 2008
