In 1969, Douglas Wilder became the first African American since Reconstruction to win a seat in the Virginia Senate. He acquired a reputation as a moderate, and in 1985 was elected state lieutenant governor. In 1989, Wilder became the first African American to be elected governor in the U.S. He left office in 1994 and was elected mayor of Richmond in 2004.
