He also worked a stint as a CBS Radio News journalist. Brinkley later became the legal father of supermodel Christie Brinkley. He died on July 14, 2012, at the age of 91, in Sag Harbor, New York.

Don Brinkley died on July 14, 2012, at the age of 91, in Sag Harbor, New York. He was survived by his wife, Marge; children Jeff and Kim; stepchildren Greg and Christie; and several grandchildren.
