But in 1999's A Walk on the Moon, Lane's dynamic performance reestablished her career. In 2000, she appeared in The Perfect Storm and later earned an Oscar nomination for her role as a wayward wife in 2002's Unfaithful. Lane has since worked more box office magic with romantic fare like Under the Tuscan Sun and Nights in Rodanthe, with additional projects including Secretariat, Man of Steel and Trumbo.

Background and Early Career

Diane Lane was born on January 22, 1965, in New York City. Lane's parents divorced when she was an infant, and she spent her first six years living with her mother. In 1971, Lane's father regained custody, and she remained in his care for the rest of her childhood. Her father, Burt Lane, was a drama coach and eventually doubled as his daughter's manager.

Lane began her film career at age 13, opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, in A Little Romance (1979). Lane earned critical acclaim for her performance as a bright American girl living in Paris. She thus became very popular among teenage audiences. In 1979, she graced the cover of Time, which profiled her as Hollywood's newest rising star.

Work With Coppola

Lane's sultry combination of sexuality and innocence caught the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola. He bolstered her visibility by casting her in a number of his films, including The Outsiders (1983), which paired Lane with Matt Dillon, and Rumble Fish (1983). Coppola also gave Lane a lead role in The Cotton Club (1984), which co-starred Richard Gere, Gregory Hines and Nicolas Cage. But the movie was a box office failure, and Lane's performance was criticized as being unconvincing and premature.

Throughout the early '90s, Lane made a number of forgettable movies, including Chaplin (1992), Judge Dredd (1995) and Jack (1996). However, in 1999's A Walk on the Moon, Lane's dynamic performance as a frustrated 1960s housewife opposite Viggo Mortensen reestablished her career. Shortly after, she appeared in the heart-warming film My Dog Skip (1999) with Kevin Bacon and Frankie Muniz.

Oscar Nod for 'Unfaithful'

In 2000, Lane appeared in The Perfect Storm with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. The following year, she co-starred with Keanu Reeves in Hardball and in the spooky drama The Glass House, with Leelee Sobieski. Lane then earned the first Oscar nomination of her career for her role as a wayward wife in 2002's Unfaithful, in which she reunited with her Cotton Club co-star Gere.

Lane went on to garner more lead roles, as seen with the romantic outings Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) and Nights in Rodanthe (2008; in which she once again worked with Gere) as well as the thriller Untraceable (2008). Other Lane films from this period included Hollywoodland (2006), co-starring Adrien Brody, Jumper (2008) and Secretariat (2010), with John Malkovich.

2013 saw Lane enter the realm of comic-book fandom with her role in Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill. The actress portrayed the title character's adoptive mother Martha Kent in the blockbuster outing, reprising her role for the 2016 sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Lane also co-starred with Bryan Cranston in the writerly drama Trumbo (2015).

Personal Life

In 2004, Lane married fellow actor Josh Brolin. With Brolin experiencing major substance abuse issues, the couple divorced in 2013. She was previously wed to actor Christopher Lambert, with the two having a daughter.
