Profile
Comedian. Born September 4, 1960, in Harlem, New York, as the third of ten children. His parents, supermarket manager Howell Wayans and social worker Elvira Wayans, were strict Jehovah's Witnesses. Because of their faith, Wayans and his nine siblings were not allowed to associate with other children in their neighborhood. Instead, the family found ways to entertain each other—usually through comedy.
Wayans started his standup-comedy career in 1982, eventually landing a role in Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and in his brother Keenen's film, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1984). Damon's successful film career helped him land a role on the TV sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1985. Wayans left the show after only a year in order to pursue more film projects, including Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Roxanne (1987) with Steve Martin, and Punchline (1988) with Tom Hanks.
In 1990, Wayans experienced a new level of fame as a member of his brother Keenen's new sketch comedy show In Living Color. He stayed on the show for only two years, but during that time he popularized characters such as Blankman, who later became the inspiration for a full-length feature film in 1994, and Homey D. Clown.
In 2001, Damon starred on the TV series My Wife and Kids, which earned him critical acclaim and lasted for four years. Since then, he has been involved in a series of projects including voiceover work for Farce of the Penguins (2006) and a sketch comedy show on Showtime called The Underground (2006). He is currently working on an untitled project set for release in 2010.
He currently lives in Beverly Hills, California.
