Trained at the acclaimed Abbey Theatre, Colm Meaney performed on the stage in Dublin, England, and New York City before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a screen career. He made his feature film debut in 1986??s Omega Syndrome, but is perhaps best known to American audiences as Chief Engineer Miles O'Brien on the hit series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He portrayed Chief O??Brien from 1987 to 1999.

Colm Meaney continued to nurture his film career throughout the 1990s. Notable films include 1991??s The Commitments, 1994's The Road to Wellville and 1997??s Con Air. He received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his performance as a gruff father facing the unplanned pregnancy of his unwed daughter in the 1993 comedy The Snapper.

Colm Meaney was married to actress Bairbre Dowling, the daughter of Irish-American actors Vincent Dowling and Brenda Doyle, from 1977 to 1994.
