Actor. Born February 9, 1953 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Ciaran Hinds is the only son of five children born to a physician and amateur actress. He studied law at Queen's University, but soon abandoned it to enroll at the esteemed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. A member of the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Ciaran Hinds appeared in several notable stage plays, including a Sam Mendes-directed production of Richard III in 1993 and the Tony Award-nominated Closer in 1999.
On the big screen, Ciaran Hinds is best known for his work in period dramas. He made his debut as one of the medieval knights in 1981??s Excalibur and starred in Persuasion, based on a Jane Austen novel, in 1995. Other films include the screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Oscar and Lucinda, Veronica Guerin, The Sum of All Fears and Munich.
In 2006, Ciaran Hinds portrayed Gaius Julius Caesar in the BBC/HBO series Rome. Other notable television projects include 1993??s Hostages, 2003??s Broken Morning and 2004??s The Mayor of Casterbridge for which he received the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series. Ciaran Hinds has also been praised for his audio productions and was the recipient of the Audie Award for Best Audio Drama Performance for The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare in 2004.
