Chris Columbus is a screenwriter, director and producer. He sold his screenplay, Gremlins, to Steven Spielberg, and also directed some Harry Potter movies.

Synopsis

Chris Columbus, born in Pennsylvania in 1958, sold his fourth screenplay, Gremlins (1984), to Steven Spielberg. He later developed two other scripts for the director: Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and The Goonies (1985). He made his directorial debut in 1988 with an ill-reviewed teen comedy. The next film he directed was a huge success. Columbus also took on the challenge of directing the first two Harry Potter movies. More recently, he has directed Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010).

Big Break in Film

Writer, director and producer Christopher Joseph Columbus was born on September 10, 1958, in Spangler, Pennsylvania. Raised in Ohio, Columbus loved comic books and horror films as a boy, eventually setting his sights on movie making and enrolling at Tisch School of the Arts as a film student at New York University. He sold his first screenplay while still in school, and later sold his his fourth, Gremlins, to legendary director Steven Spielberg. The young writer moved to Los Angeles to work on rewrites for the script, and developed two other scripts for the iconic director: Young Sherlock Holmes and The Goonies, both released in 1985.

Film Career

In 1988, Columbus made his directorial debut with the ill-reviewed teen comedy Adventures in Babysitting. The next film he directed, Home Alone was a huge success, followed by another box office hit Mrs. Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams. Columbus also took on the challenge of bringing J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter to life as director for the much-anticipated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001 and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002. He has since done work as a producer and director for the films The Help (2011) and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Theif (2010), respectively.

Columbus is married to choreographer Monica Devereux. The couple has two daughters and a son.
