Charles Scribner was born on February 21, 1821, in New York City. In 1846, with Isaac D. Baker, he established the publishing firm Baker & Scribner. After Baker's death, the firm was renamed Charles Scribner's Sons. The publishing house listed theological and philosophical texts, as well as European literature. Scribner also served as a trustee at Skidmore College. He died on August 26, 1871, in Lucerne, Switzerland. After his death, Charles Scribner's Sons was headed by Scribner's three sons, John Blair, Charles and Arthur Hawley Scribner, respectively.
