Born on October 26, 1757, in Charleston, South Carolina, Charles Pinckney was captured and held by the British during the American Revolution. Following his release, in the late 1770s, he began a law practice. From 1784 to 1787, Pinckney served in the Continental Congress, and in 1789, he became the 37th governor of South Carolina. Pinckney signed the U.S. Constitution and notably contributed to the Fugitive Slave and "no religious test" clauses. He also drafted the Constitution of the State of South Carolina. Pinckney later served in Congress, pushing for all white men to have voting rights. Later in life, he served as U.S. minister to Spain. He died in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 29, 1824.
