Best Known For

Charles Baudelaire was a French poet who also produced notable work as an essayist, art critic, and pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe.

Profile

Charles Baudelaire was a French poet. While a student, he became addicted to opium and contracted syphilis. His incredible collection of poetry, Les fleurs du mal (1857; The Flowers of Evil), deals with erotic, aesthetic, and social themes. He published just one novel, La fanfarlo, in 1847. Baudelaire is perhaps best known, however, for his masterly translation of Edgar Allan Poe. He died in debt.
