Born in New York City on April 29, 1917, Celeste Holm became popular for her role in the 1943 Broadway musical Oklahoma!. She then landed a part the film Gentleman's Agreement (1947), for which she won an Academy Award (for supporting actress). She went on to receive Oscar nominations for roles in 1949's Come to the Stable, in which she plays a nun; and 1950's All About Eve (1950), playing Karen Richards. She also made several television appearances throughout her career,

including as Phyllis Brandt on Columbo, in 1976; and as Hattie Greene on the show Promised Land, in the 1990s. Holm died in New York on July 15, 2012, at the age of 95.

Acting Career

Celeste Holm was born in New York City on April 29, 1917, to insurance adjuster Theodor Holm and artist Jean Parke Holm.

Holm became well-known in Hollywood in 1943, when she performed in the Broadway musical Oklahoma!. She then landed a part the film Gentleman's Agreement (1947), for which she won an Academy Award (for supporting actress). She went on to receive Oscar nominations for roles in 1949's Come to the Stable, in which she plays a nun; and 1950's All About Eve (1950), in which she plays Karen Richards. Holm also made several television appearances throughout her career, including as Phyllis Brandt on Columbo, in 1976; and as Hattie Greene on the show Promised Land, in the 1990s.

Personal Life and Death

Holm married five times: She and actor/director Ralph Nelson wed in 1938, and divorced nearly one year later; she and Francis E. H. Davies married in 1940, before splitting five years later; her relationship with third husband A. Schuyler Dunning lasted from 1946 to 1952; and her marriage to actor Wesley Addy lasted from 1961 until 1996, following Addy's death. In 2004, Holm married Frank Basile.

Holm died in New York on July 15, 2012, at the age of 95. Several weeks before her death, she had been admitted to a New York hospital for severe dehydration, and had suffered a heart attack on July 13. She was survived by husband Frank Basile; her sons, Theodor Nelson and Daniel Dunning; and three grandchildren.
