but she was arrested for witness tampering and for her involvement in a hijacking plot to be used as leverage toward Manson's and others' release from prison. She was released after five years, and distanced herself from Manson and the family.
Early Life
Catherine Share was born in Paris, France on December 10, 1942. Her parents were part of an anti-Nazi underground movement, and killed themselves in an act of defiance against the Nazis. She was adopted at the age of 8, and her new family moved to Hollywood, California.
The Manson 'Family'
When Share was 16, her adoptive mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer, killed herself, and her adoptive father abandoned her when he remarried. She entered college, but soon dropped out and embraced the hippie counterculture movement, spending her time smoking marijuana and taking LSD. In 1967, she met Bobby Beausoleil, a Manson associate, on the set of a soft-porn film being shot at the Spahn Ranch, which would later serve as home base for the Manson "Family." Beausoleil introduced her to Manson, and Share found in him someone who had answers to all her questions, a Christlike figure who could take away all of the pain that Share had been accumulating. (Manson, who gave everyone on the ranch a nickname, dubbed Share "Gypsy.")
Catherine Share became so enamored with Manson and his message that she became a recruiter for the family, bringing both Linda Kasabian and Leslie Van Houten into the fold. In October 1969, Manson and several of his associates were arrested and charged with the infamous Tate/LaBianca murders that occurred in August of that year. While not involved in the murders, Share and several others were charged with conspiracy to attempt to dissuade a witness from testifying when they tried to give Barbara Hoyt, a Manson family member, a lethal dose of LSD so that she couldn't testify against Manson. While in prison, Share gave birth to a son, later revealed to be fathered by Manson follower Steve "Clem" Grogan.
In August 1971, Share and Manson Family member Mary Brunner, as well as several others, held up a surplus store and took nearly 150 guns. When the police showed up, a shootout ensued, and Share and a few others were shot (none fatally) and taken into custody. It was revealed that the group planned to hijack a passenger jet and stage a hostage crisis, through which they planned to everage the release of Manson and other members of the Manson Family.
When Share was released in 1975, she disavowed allegiance to Manson and became a born-again Christian.
