Synopsis

Borte Ujin was a Mongol grand empress and the wife of Genghis Khan. Ujin was the daughter of the tribe chieftain, and, as was the custom of the time, a marriage was arranged between Borte and a young man named Temujin (later known as Genghis Khan). As head of the first court of Genghis Kahn, she helped rule the Mongol homeland during his long absences and was revered by the Mongol people.

Grand empress, wife of Genghis Khan. Born c. 1166 to central Mongolia's Onggirat tribe, Borte Ujin was the daughter of the tribe chieftain. As was the custom of the time, a marriage was arranged between Borte and a young man named Temujin (later known as Genghis Khan) to forge an alliance with the nearby Borjigin tribe. After delivering his son to Borte's family's house, Temujin's father was captured and killed by an enemy clan.

After their marriage, Borte was kidnapped by another warring tribe and held captive for eight months before she was rescued by Temujin. She later gave birth to four sons, Jochi, Chagatai, Ogedei and Tolui, and five daughters. Though Genghis Khan would go on to father numerous children by his wives and mistresses, only the four sons he had by Borte were recognized as potential Great Khans.

Throughout her marriage to Genghis Kahn, Borte was considered one of his most trusted advisers. As head of the first court of Genghis Kahn, she helped rule the Mongol homeland during his long absences and was revered by the Mongol people.
