McDonnell has also been airing television ads to promote his record as governor. Some analysts see these ads as an effort to lobby for the vice-presidential spot on the Mitt Romney ticket.

McDonnell has been married to wife Maureen since 1976. The couple has five children together. Their daughter, Jeanine, is a former U.S. Army soldier who served in Iraq.
