Profile

Politician, lawyer. Born on November 5, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowa. Once a Republican legislator, Bob Barr is now taking on an even bigger challenge. He is the Libertarian Party candidate for president in the 2008 elections. After graduating from University of Southern California in 1970, Barr soon joined the CIA and remained with the agency for seven years.

Barr earned his law degree from Georgetown University in 1977. In 1986, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the post of U.S. Attorney General for the Northern District of Georgia. He then spent a year as the president of the Southeastern Legal Foundation from 1990 to 1991.

After an unsuccessful Senate bid in 1992, Barr was elected to the House of Representatives two years later. He served Georgia??s Seventh District from January 1995 to January 2003. During his time in office, Barr served on the Government Reform Committee and the Committee of Financial Services. He left office after a failed run for his fourth term in 2003. After this defeat, Barr became the 21st Century Liberties Chair for Freedom and Privacy with the lobbying group, the American Conservative Union.

In 2008, Barr returned to politics as the Libertarian Party??s candidate for president. He is running on a platform of smaller government along with Wayne Allyn Root as the vice-presidential candidate. The pair face quite a challenge, taking on the better-known and better-funded candidates from the Republican Party (John McCain and Sarah Palin) and the Democratic Party (Barack Obama and Joe Biden).

Barr had hoped to gain some support from Ron Paul, a former Republican presidential candidate, who supports many libertarian ideals. Paul, however, has chosen to back the Constitution Party??s candidate Chuck Baldwin.

In addition to politics, Barr works as a lawyer with the Law Offices of Edwin Marger and operates Liberty Strategies, LLC, his own consulting firm. He lives in Cobb County, Georgia, with his wife Jeri. The couple has four children and six grandchildren.
